World Cosplay Summit 2006

world_cosplay_summ0003.JPG

By chance or perhaps otaku fate, my coworker and coconspirator Peter happened to catch a commercial for the World Cosplay Summit 2006 being held at Oasis 21 in Sakae. However, he got the starting time wrong, so he, I, and half of ECC's personnel department showed up 6 hours early and spent the hotter part of the day taking pictures ... of other people who showed up 6 hours early. The competition was between 11 international teams, but the majority of the people pictured below were just spectators who turned up in costume. For Peter's article and virtually identical photographs go to Hikan Ninja

I could swear I've seen this chick on Myspace. If anyone runs across her profile, let me know.

We thought you had to pay to take pictures of these two, but later I found out that anyone with a Docomo phone, such as myself, could. Simon liked this angle better anyway.

I wasn't going to bother the cosplay family while they were trying to take a break and get some ice cream. However, Peter's girlfriend had no qualms about asking them to pose while waiting in line. I guess that's the price you pay for wearing a costume in public.

In line for the show. The upskirt shot was completely unintentional.

Hey, you dropped your purse.

Not one to stand out, Peter made himself slightly dorkier by tucking his shirt into his pants. Nobody else wanted his picture though.

Although his face is red, Simon's not drunk (words not often uttered). He's just straining to stay upright with Peter on top of him (words ... too frequently uttered).

Creepy dolls.

The youngest of the creepy dolls.

You know, cosplay loses some of its magic when you see them rehearsing in street clothes. Without a costume, you're just another dork with a styrofoam sword. Most of the stage shows turned out to be pretty mediocre, except for Spain's which was just bad.

Hahaha. Look at all the dorks taking pictures.

A little later on, this girl did some more erotic lesbianish poses with the chick pictured below, but I was two floors away by that point.

You know that dream where you go to the cosplay convention and suddenly you realize you aren't wearing any pants.

If you look closely, you'll find a few costumes in the crowd.

Here's a video I found on Youtube. I'm not in it.

There's a big 'ol controvery over why America isn't participating this year.

here are two good threads from cosplay.com about it:

http://forums.cosplay.com/showthread.php?t=62936&highlight=world+cosplay+summit

well, the incident from 2005 is suspected to be the reason why the US isn't participating in the summit this year, or possibly ever again.

last year: the US winning Team, a Rose of Versailles group, couldn't participate because the creator of Rose of Versailles doesn't like cosplays of their work. So a group was made up of 7 other individuals who participated.

Then the US team that was made up of the inviduals and participated in the WCS was pretty much abandoned by TV Aishi in the studio after it was over. After they were told that they'd be picked up by a car and taken to the airport to go home. No car ever came, they pretty much were left alone in a foreign country.

And this year yet again another team, this time the Italian team, was disqualified for having Rose of Versailles costumes as well.

Okay, now check out this year's winners of the WCS:
Grand Champion: Brazil (Angel Sanctuary)
2nd Place: Japan Web Team (Rose of Versailles)
3rd Place: Italy (Project ARMS)
Sponsor's Choice: Japan Tokyo Team (Gundam Seed)

Did you catch that? look at the second place team. They're cosplaying as Rose of Versailles. Why weren't THEY disqualifed? I mean, apparently it's not allowed. It's all just very messed up.
